For Literacy Tutors

What is Structured Literacy?

The characteristics of structured literacy include systematic, explicit instruction that integrates listening, speaking, reading and writing and emphasizes the structure of language across the speech sound system (phonology), the writing system (orthography), the structure of sentences (syntax), the meaningful parts of words (morphology), the relationships among words (semantics), and the organization of spoken and written discourse.

Structured Literacy is:
Explicit – concepts are taught using direct teaching of the content or skill to be learned, using clear and unambiguous language.
Systematic – the elements of the language are taught sequentially with intensive practice and continual feedback.
Cumulative – lessons build on prior knowledge, progressing from simple to more complex concepts.
Multisensory – lessons engage the learner in visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile responses (often at the same time)
(The International Dyslexia Association)

This evidence-based approach is especially effective for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.

Short Professional Background

Jane Gramenz is a dyslexia consultant, educator, advocate, and Master’s Level Certified Barton Reading & Spelling tutor specializing in structured literacy instruction for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.

She holds an M.A. in Teaching and a B.A. in Psychology and Communications, and has worked with students in both special education and mainstream classroom settings. In addition to working directly with students, Ms. Jane supports parents, collaborates with other tutors, and provides guidance to schools navigating dyslexia and literacy challenges.

As a mother of three children — including one with dyslexia — she brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to her work. She is deeply committed to early identification, effective intervention, and the belief that every student can learn to read and write well with the right instruction.

Why This Work Matters

While working with students with dyslexia, I eventually discovered something much closer to home — my own daughter is dyslexic.
Like many bright students with dyslexia, she had challenges that were not immediately obvious. But with the right structured literacy instruction and support, she was able to thrive academically and pursue her passions with confidence.

Her journey reinforced what I had already begun to see in my work with students: with the right instruction, students with dyslexia can succeed in remarkable ways. Today, she continues to pursue her academic and creative interests while demonstrating the resilience and strengths often found in students with dyslexia.
