What is Structured Literacy?

The characteristics of structured literacy include systematic, explicit instruction that integrates listening, speaking, reading and writing and emphasizes the structure of language across the speech sound system (phonology), the writing system (orthography), the structure of sentences (syntax), the meaningful parts of words (morphology), the relationships among words (semantics), and the organization of spoken and written discourse.
Structured Literacy is:
Explicit – concepts are taught using direct teaching of the content or skill to be learned, using clear and unambiguous language.
Systematic – the elements of the language are taught sequentially with intensive practice and continual feedback.
Cumulative – lessons build on prior knowledge, progressing from simple to more complex concepts.
Multisensory – lessons engage the learner in visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile responses (often at the same time)

(The International Dyslexia Association)
This evidence-based approach is especially effective for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.

Why This Work Matters

The work became personal when Ms. Jane learned that her own daughter is dyslexic. Like many bright students with dyslexia, her daughter faced challenges that were not immediately obvious. With effective Structured Literacy instruction and support, she was able to thrive academically and pursue her interests with confidence.
That experience reinforced what Ms. Jane had already seen in her work with students: with appropriate instruction and support, students with dyslexia can succeed in remarkable ways. Her daughter continues to pursue her academic and creative interests while demonstrating the resilience and strengths often found in students with dyslexia.
