Structured Literacy Private Tutoring

Ms. Jane provides individualized structured literacy instruction for students with dyslexia and other reading challenges using evidence-based teaching methods grounded in the science of reading.

Choosing A Dyslexia Tutor

Ms. Jane uses the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach, one of the most research-supported methods for teaching students with dyslexia. She holds a Master's certification in the Barton Reading & Spelling System.
Instruction may also incorporate Structured Word Inquiry to help students understand the structure and meaning of English words, including those that appear irregular or “non-phonetic.”
Students do not need a formal diagnosis or assessment to begin tutoring. Adults seeking to strengthen their reading and spelling skills are also welcome.

What to Expect From Tutoring

Structured literacy instruction is explicit, systematic, and individualized. Sessions focus on building strong decoding, spelling, and reading comprehension skills through carefully sequenced instruction tailored to each student’s needs.

How Long Does it Take to Complete the Barton Reading & Spelling System?

This is one of the most common questions families ask. Because each student’s learning profile is unique, there is no single timeline for completing the program.
Several factors influence progress, including:
• Consistency of attendance (two sessions per week is typically recommended)
• Support from caregivers in maintaining program expectations
• Avoiding conflicting reading interventions at the same time
• The type and severity of dyslexia
• Management of co-occurring challenges such as ADHD
In discussions with colleagues, some students complete the program in approximately two years, while others may take longer. Progress depends greatly on the individual learner and the factors listed above.
A helpful way to think about structured literacy instruction is:
“It is a marathon, not a race. We move as quickly as possible, but as slowly as necessary.”

Schedule a Consultation
If you are unsure whether structured literacy tutoring is the right fit for your child, Ms. Jane offers consultation conversations to discuss your student’s learning history and next steps.
