Dyslexia screening is available on a limited basis and by appointment only. A Dyslexia Consultation is the first step in determining whether screening is appropriate.

Ms. Jane completed graduate-level coursework in dyslexia screening through the University of San Diego and holds a certificate in identifying, with a high degree of accuracy, whether an individual fits the classic profile of dyslexia. When screening is appropriate, the in-person process uses multiple screening tools to assess skills associated with dyslexia.

Screening is not a diagnosis. The resulting report provides detailed information that may be shared with a qualified diagnosing professional, school team, or medical provider when additional evaluation or documentation is needed.

What the Screening Process Includes

Following the initial consultation, Ms. Jane selects approximately 8–11 screening tools based on the individual’s age, history, and areas of concern. Areas screened may include phonological awareness and memory, rapid automatic naming, decoding, reading fluency, spelling, and other literacy-related skills.

​Screening is completed in person to support standardized administration and the validity of the results. The findings are summarized in a detailed written report that identifies patterns of strengths and difficulties and outlines appropriate next steps.

Screening Reports and Arizona Schools

A private screening report can provide useful information to share with a school team. However, each school determines special education eligibility through its evaluation process. There is no guarantee that a school will accept a private screening report as sufficient documentation for an IEP or other services.

​Arizona House Bill 2170 requires the IEP of a student who qualifies for special education under the specific learning disability category to indicate whether the student has been diagnosed with dyslexia. The law does not require a school to obtain a dyslexia diagnosis or conduct testing specifically to diagnose dyslexia. Schools remain responsible for conducting a sufficiently comprehensive evaluation in all areas related to the suspected disability.

​When a Comprehensive Evaluation Is Needed

Some individuals need a comprehensive evaluation rather than, or in addition to, a screening. A qualified evaluator can provide a diagnosis when appropriate, assess for co-occurring conditions, and supply documentation that may be needed for educational, testing, college, or workplace accommodations.
Ms. Jane may recommend an outside evaluation when a more comprehensive learning profile or formal diagnostic documentation is needed.
